The Funder
The funding to build the bat house was provided by The Berkeley Group, a leading UK homebuilder and developer. Berkeley has been a WWT partner since joining forces with Thames Water and WWT in the 1990s to create the London Wetland Centre from disused reservoirs. In return for land to build luxury houses overlooking the reserve, the company provided much of the funding and construction expertise for the project.
Berkeley continues to lead the way in urban regeneration projects and was proud to receive the 2008 Queen’s Award for Enterprise: Sustainable Development.
“At Berkeley the key to a successful house-building business is to have a passion for our product and to ensure that it meets the demands and needs of our purchasers. With the Berkeley bat house, a similar process has taken place. We are immensely impressed by the amount of research that has taken place to get the product just right for the ‘customer’, in this case for pipistrelle and Daubenton’s bats. We hope that they enjoy their new Berkeley home.”
